The archives consist chiefly of educational material and pamphlets for members. No membership lists, administrative material, or financial records have been transferred.

The Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living (SSRL) research collection is made up of records donated by:

1. Herbert Sutcliffe / The Sutcliffe Schools of Radiant Living, 2. Jim Jefcoate, Invercargill 3. Peggy Werry, Wellington 4. Charles Bowly, SSRL leader following the deaths of Herbert and Phyllis Sutcliffe 5. Hilary Stace, a public historian who recorded interviews with several SSRL members.

The accessions from each source have been given a basic listing which equates to numbered slips in each box.

Overall Series have been defined as follows:

1. Publications 2. Cassette tapes 3. Reel to reel tapes 4. Wellington School records

The research notes and interviews by Hilary Stace, and the records created by the Invercargill School of the SSRL, have each been described as a separate record group.

Only the SSRL audio cassette tapes have item descriptions in the archives database so far. They have also been copied to CD and then to MP3 format.

 Custodial history note

In 1989 papers and tapes were deposited by the School at the time of its disestablishment. In 2007 further papers were deposited by former members from Wellington and Invercargill.

 Biographical/Historical note

The Sutcliffe Schools of Radiant Living were a financially successful organisation run by Herbert Sutcliffe (1886-1971), which provided courses in self-actualisation and similar psychological self-help group counselling. After Sutcliffe's death in 1971 the organisation was run first by his widow Phyllis, and then by Charles C. Bowly, but could not continue longterm.

In 1989 the School founded the Herbert Sutcliffe scholarships for Humanities and Social Science students at Victoria University of Wellington, and deposited a set of publications and tapes.

These original tapes were held by an Invercargill member of the Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living. They were deposited for safe-keeping in 2007 but as copies of the audiocassette versions of the tape contents had already been created and digitised, these reels have not been processed in further detail.

These records were held by Mrs Peggy Werry of the Wellington School.

 Scope and Contents note

[Preliminary listing in paper finding aid only]. This accession includes:

Records to do with producing booklets e.g. 'How to re-make your life', master copy of 8th edition, 'Personality problems' 4th edition page proofs. Certificate of Incorporation of Wellington School dated 28 June 1945. Copies of eliminating Diet, Membership cards, Daily Supply Prayer cards, Radiant Inspirations card sets. Note on Symbology of the Radiant Living emblem. Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living seals. Wall chart to illustrate lectures on Everyday and Spiritual Psychology. Manuscript notebook with 'Thoughts and Quotations'.

The accession contained many duplicate copies of publications, including multiple sets of the journal 'Radiant Living', 1948-1984. Of these, two sets have been retained, one being those annotated by Mrs Werry, and the other the best available copy. It is intended to offer the further duplicate copies to interested libraries.
